Default Traffic spikes?

I'm wondering these odd traffic spikes, a joe average proxy of ~400UV per day jumps to 2500UV a day for a few days, and then goes back down again.

Different sources etc. No single source of the traffic, and no linking factors i could notice easily from it all, so what's usually happening on when this happens?

The worst is that it never translates to actual advertising revenue!

Can you find out the demographics of where the traffic is coming from? Knowing which country is comes from provides a good indicator on this matter.

There's a possibility the users who used your proxies told everyone they knew about it by mouth which causes the sudden onflux of traffic. It could have died down few days later when most web filters found out about your proxy and started blocking it.

The spikes come back again later.
China, Taiwan, Iran, Russia, Vietnam seems to be popular around the time of the spikes, but the countries change, and sometimes it's US or within EU.

You might want to block China, Taiwan, Iran, Vietnam. These traffic do not convert at all for advertising. Also which analytics software are you using? It's best to use google analytics for tracking proxy visitors stats as they are much more accurate for proxies than awstats especially on demographics. Awstats gives very inaccurate traffic demographic stats for proxies.
